Challenge

The Waldorf Astoria New York is one of the world’s most iconic hotels, a symbol of luxury, legacy, and landmark architecture. When the property closed in 2017 for an ambitious restoration, the goal was clear: preserve the building’s historic elegance while transforming it into a state-of-the-art destination for modern living.

With 377 rooms under redevelopment, Mode:Green was brought on to design and implement a comprehensive smart technology infrastructure that would serve both guests and staff. The scope included lighting, automation, and AV systems all of which needed to be seamlessly integrated without disrupting the hotels carefully preserved aesthetic.

The Solution

Over the course of the eight-year renovation, Mode:Green worked hand in hand with ownership, designers, and brand partners to deliver a sophisticated guest room management system tailored to Waldorf Astoria’s needs. The solution included fully integrated in-room controls for lighting, shading, HVAC, and automation centered around Lutron’s MyRoom XC platform. Thermostats and motorized drapery systems were also implemented to ensure personalized comfort and effortless control in every space.

Each room was outfitted with discreet interfaces that allowed guests to easily manage their environment while maintaining the clean design. Behind the scenes, a back-end monitoring system enabled staff to track room conditions, respond to issues in real time, and coordinate with guest reservation and check-in systems. Digital signage and custom control systems were also included within the guest rooms, enhancing the personalized experience by delivering intuitive access to in-room controls and services.

In addition, Mode:Green also led the AV design and integration for the Waldorf’s state-of-the-art Sales Center. This showcase space featured a 30-foot curved LED wall, thirty video endpoints, and a full-scale mockup room, allowing prospective buyers to explore the residence experience in a visually immersive environment.

With Mode:Green’s long-term involvement, the property now delivers a five-star experience powered by intuitive smart systems that operate quietly behind the scenes. Providing guests with precise control over lighting, temperature, and ambiance.
